To have true leadership success you have to become a leader of leaders. The only way this is possible is to do things that set you apart from the average leader. Of course, this can be much easier said than done in most cases but, there is one sure-fire way to stand out above the majority of leaders.
James Garfield once said, ‘The men who succeed best in public life are those who take the risk of standing by their own convictions.’ If you will apply this one leadership success key in your life you will soar above most of the leaders that you will ever be around. Most leaders today don’t live by a strong set of convictions; therefore, they are easily persuaded to do things that hurt their character and integrity.
If you stand by your own convictions there will be times where you may feel like you are missing out on an ideal opportunity but you know that the way things are being handled are not above board. There may be times when it looks like you can fast-track your leadership success by doing something that compromises your convictions. In the long, run this will actually hurt your leadership success.
Today, people are looking for a leader that is willing to stand up for what they believe in without wavering when something comes along that might personally benefit them. Plus, the people who are following your lead will begin to duplicate the same thing that they see in you and, before you know it, you will have a team that is operating on standards way below anything you ever wanted. It’s not always easy to stand up for your convictions, especially if it goes against the mainstream, but people will respect and follow someone with solid convictions.
